Writing

From pipeline activists camped-out on the sweeping South Dakotan plains, to former miners nursing pints in Merthyr Tydfil’s Labour Club — I love helping share voices from the frontlines of our changing natural world. Stories of struggles, hopes, fears and solutions; of how people are coming together, even as our climate and landscapes are being wrenched apart.

You can find published examples of these feature stories - alongside reviews, news and analyses on related environmental subjects - in the New Statesman, BBC Future, The Ecologist and Prospect, among others.

TV production & development

I also have four years’ experience in documentary TV, conceiving and helping produce programs for the BBC and Channel4. Spanning culinary journeys through China and the story of Scotland’s ancient border-wars, each project was peopled by an amazing set of presenters, contributors and crew (and copious flasks of hot tea).

Editing

As an editor at AFP in Hong Kong from 2019-2020, I handled an array of copy from across the Asia Pacific region. I also helped the local desk report during this turbulent period encompassing the pro-democracy protests and the beginning of Covid-19.

In 2020, I returned to the UK and to the New Statesman, where I edited the online content of their new international team — before being made their full-time environment correspondent and covering a range of issue which you can read about here.

In addition, I also helped launch and co-edit a weekly newsletter, From a Climate Correspondent, which featured personal stories from writers around the world and which won an EFSJ NextJournalism prize and grant.

I went freelance in August 2023 and am open for commission.
